Consumer Protection Laws

Consumer rights are protected under the Ley Federal de Protección al Consumidor, enforced by the PROFECO. Consumers are entitled to truthful advertising, clear pricing, warranties, and fair contract terms. Adhesion contracts (standard-form agreements) are closely regulated, and abusive clauses may be void. PROFECO offers administrative complaint procedures that are relatively fast and accessible, even for foreigners. Businesses that violate consumer law may face fines, forced refunds, and public sanctions.
CONDUSEF is Mexico’s government agency in charge of protecting users of financial services such as bank accounts, loans, insurance, and investments. It helps consumers understand their rights, provides guidance, and mediates disputes with financial institutions to ensure fair and transparent practices. It also promotes financial education so both residents and foreigners can make informed decisions in Mexico’s financial system.
