Family law is primarily regulated at the state level, covering marriage, divorce, child custody, support, and marital property regimes (separate or community property). Foreigners may marry or divorce in México, but international elements (nationality, domicile, assets abroad) require conflict-of-laws analysis. Succession law allows both testate (by will) and intestate inheritance; wills executed before a Mexican notary are strongly recommended to simplify probate. Mexican estates are administered locally for assets located in México, regardless of the decedent’s nationality. Without proper planning, heirs may face lengthy judicial proceedings and tax inefficiencies.
